The Challenges and Joys of Freelance Food Photography

As a freelance editorial photographer, I’ve been diving into food photography lately, and let me tell you—it’s been both challenging and rewarding. Shooting on location means every assignment is different, with unique lighting, plating, and space to navigate. Add in the fact that food photography is a relatively new venture for me, and it’s been a crash course in creativity and problem-solving.

But the best part? The post-shoot reward. There’s nothing better than getting to eat your subject!

Savoring a Double Cheeseburger at Feltner Brother’s

One recent shoot took me to Feltner Brother’s in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Their double cheeseburgers are not only photogenic but incredibly tasty. While capturing the perfect shot can sometimes feel frustrating, it’s hard to stay stressed when you get to enjoy a delicious meal afterward. Looking at this photo again, I’m tempted to head back for lunch!

Playing with Light at Meridienne Dessert Salon & Cafe

Another memorable assignment was at Meridienne Dessert Salon & Cafe in Rogers, Arkansas. From the moment I walked in and saw the giant window casting beautiful natural light, I knew it would be a great shoot.

The interplay of light and shadow, combined with the colors reflected on the café’s desk, made for some creative opportunities. When I turned my camera in the opposite direction, I discovered the chandeliers in the background added an elegant touch to the photos. This was a dream shoot—ample time, beautiful lighting, and a chance to experiment and bring my ideas to life.

The Art and Process of Food Photography

Food photography is far from a “point-and-shoot” process. It’s about envisioning how the final image should look and then working through the steps to make it happen. Adjusting lighting, angles, and props can transform an image, and I love exploring those possibilities.

While it can be frustrating at times, the creative process is incredibly rewarding. Each shoot is a learning experience, and I’m constantly discovering new ways to approach my craft.

Wrapping It Up

Food photography as a freelance editorial photographer has pushed me out of my comfort zone, but it’s also been an exciting way to grow and refine my skills. Whether it’s capturing the perfect burger or playing with light in a charming café, every assignment brings new challenges and opportunities.

If you’re a restaurant, café, or publication needing mouthwatering food photography, let’s work together to create images that tell your story and showcase your culinary creations!
