Capturing Influence: Portraits for AY Magazine at Crystal Bridges Museum

As a freelance editorial photographer, I’ve had the privilege of visiting the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art multiple times recently for a special project: photographing the nominees for AY Magazine’s Powerful Men and Powerful Women sections. The assignment celebrates 12 men and 12 women nominated by their peers for their influence, impact, and service to others—a truly inspiring group of individuals.

Photographing at Crystal Bridges: A Dream Location

Crystal Bridges is a photographer’s paradise. With its stunning architecture, expansive windows, and serene surroundings, it feels like every corner is a perfect backdrop. Honestly, I think even an accidental shot could turn out amazing in a setting like this!

For this project, I had the pleasure of photographing Sandra “Sandy” Edwards, Deputy Director of Museum Relations, and Don Bacigalupi, Executive Director of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Both subjects brought their own unique energy and made the shoots a breeze.

The Challenge of Lighting in a Glass Wonderland

While the museum is visually stunning, its abundance of windows presented a lighting challenge. The natural light creates a beautiful ambiance, but it also means dealing with reflections and glare.

One lesson I’ve learned in my career is to solve problems during the shoot instead of relying on Photoshop. Adjusting lighting setups or repositioning a subject for just 30 seconds can save hours of post-production. It’s a principle I live by: fix it now rather than fix it later.

Why Portrait Photography Matters

This assignment was more than just taking photos—it was about capturing the essence of individuals who make a difference in their communities. It’s always rewarding to meet and photograph people who are making an impact, and having a location like Crystal Bridges as the backdrop made the experience even more meaningful.

Wrapping It Up

Freelance editorial photography gives me the opportunity to combine storytelling and creativity. Whether it’s photographing influential leaders for AY Magazine or working in breathtaking locations like Crystal Bridges, every project brings its own challenges and rewards.

If you’re looking for a photographer to capture powerful stories and create memorable images, let’s work together to bring your vision to life.
