Over the years, I’ve photographed drinks for many restaurants, capturing everything from vibrant cocktails to moody craft beverages. One of my favorite ongoing collaborations has been with Yellow Rocket Concepts, a restaurant group known for its fresh, seasonal drink offerings. Each shoot was an exciting opportunity to work alongside creative bartenders, bringing their drink concepts to life through carefully styled photography.
The Challenge of Restaurant Drink Photography
The goal of each shoot was to showcase the cocktails in their natural environment—inside the restaurant or at the bar. Each location presented a unique challenge: How do you make every drink stand out while maintaining a cohesive brand style? I loved pushing my creativity, using different compositions and lighting techniques to highlight the craftsmanship behind each cocktail.
Lighting Techniques for Stunning Cocktail Photos
To make the colors of the drinks pop, I often used a mix of strobe lighting and natural light. This combination helped enhance the vibrancy of fresh ingredients while maintaining a natural feel. Occasionally, I introduced moody lighting for a more dramatic effect—perfect for darker, more sophisticated cocktails. Adjusting the lighting based on the drink’s personality added depth and storytelling to each shot.
Unplanned Beauty in Restaurant Photography
One of my favorite shots from these projects was a spontaneous capture of leftover garnishes on the bar. The mix of bright colors and natural styling created a visually stunning image—one that wasn’t planned but turned out to be a perfect representation of the creative process behind cocktail-making.
