Day Hike turned tour of Northwest Arkansas – travel photographer

Gilli, Hap and I decided to spend Saturday out in the woods. We picked Alum Cove hike out of Tim Ernst’s book, Arkansas Day Hikes for Kids and Families. It was a simple drive to Deer, home of the Antlers, and up FR#1206 a few miles for a short hike to one of the “largest natural rock bridges in this part of the country.” Though the drive took a little longer than expected, we had a blast and were looking forward to having lunch on the bridge. As we turned into the picnic area, we were stopped by cones and saw this sign… funny that it never crossed our minds despite talking about how bad the trees still looked from the ice storm.

Plan B – a handful of miles up the road was Round Top Mountain Loop. This hike was promised to be one of the “most scenic trails in Arkansas,” and also had the remains of a crashed bomber from 1948. Perfect for a 3-year-old boy!

While driving, we stopped at the Arkansas grand canyon, then a gift shop to check out the view from atop a rickety tower. Beautiful! Gilli and Hap stepped into the gift shop only to find out that plan B hike was off due to a mud/rock slide. What are the chances!

So Arkansas! -no shoes

Gilli has lived in Arkansas for only a year, so I thought we’d just go with the flow and head to Jasper… at this point, we were only 5 miles away. I thought I would show her the square, Buffalo River and the bluffs at Steel Creek, and maybe catch a little bit of a trail along the river.

Playing with the camera. I just love river rocks!

I keep running into Cairns… this one was small and cute!

We were lucky enough catch the Elk at the end of the day.

It was decided that the drive was much, much better than the hike would have been. Fun times making fun memories!
