Capturing the Action: Highlights from the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships

I’m excited to share some standout photos from the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which took place from June 10th to 13th. This was my first time covering this outdoor event, and while it was an exhilarating experience, it also presented its fair share of challenges. Photographing for the Associated Press is an interesting endeavor because I have the freedom to capture whatever catches my eye, whether it’s the athletes, the action, or the behind-the-scenes moments. However, that freedom can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming, making it difficult to find my rhythm.

Despite the initial chaos, I found myself truly enjoying the event and the incredible athletes I had the opportunity to photograph. The energy of the competition was infectious, and I hope that Arkansas will host the event again in the future—hopefully with better weather next time!

Let’s kick off the photo highlights with a moment that made me chuckle: if I were a pole vaulter, I definitely wouldn’t want to be the athlete in this particular photo! The skill and courage required for pole vaulting are impressive, and witnessing these athletes in action was a highlight of my experience.

The first day brought an unexpected rain delay, and I was amazed by the extensive prep work that went into getting the field ready for the athletes. Squeegees and blowers were everywhere, showcasing the dedication of the staff to ensure a safe and competitive environment for all.

As I captured images of both the track events and the field competitions, it became clear that this championship was filled with thrilling moments and fierce competition.

And the results? A huge congratulations to Texas A&M, whose men’s and women’s teams both swept the event, demonstrating their dominance in collegiate track and field.

I can’t wait to share more of my favorite moments from the championships in the upcoming posts, and I look forward to the next opportunity to photograph such an exciting sporting event!
