Capturing Iconic Moments: Matt Jones and the Arkansas vs. Texas Rivalry
In the world of sports photography, certain moments stand out as iconic, forever etched in the memories of fans and athletes alike. One such moment for me was capturing a striking image of Matt Jones during the exhilarating Arkansas vs. Texas game in 2003. This game was not just another match; it was a clash of two storied programs, steeped in history and rivalry, and the atmosphere in the stadium was electric.
In that decisive moment, I captured a photograph that would go on to spark conversation and even a bit of controversy. Shortly after my photo was published in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, an email began circulating featuring a photoshopped version of the image. Someone had altered Matt’s hand to depict the infamous “Horns Down” gesture, mocking the Texas Longhorns and their “Hook ‘em Horns” sign. This playful twist on my original shot added another layer of intrigue to the moment and showcased the passion and camaraderie that college football fans share.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago, when I had a surprising encounter while walking through the mall. I stumbled upon a vendor selling merchandise that featured my photo of Matt Jones. What made it even more intriguing was that the image is copyright protected by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. It was both flattering and perplexing to see my work being sold without permission.
As a photographer, moments like this serve as a reminder of the complex intersection between art, copyright, and the world of sports.
Reflecting on that iconic game and the years that have passed since, I’m reminded of the thrill of capturing fleeting moments that resonate deeply with fans. Whether it’s a tense game-winning touchdown or the celebration that follows, each photograph tells a story that transcends time. I look forward to sharing more about my experiences in sports photography, the stories behind the images, and the importance of respecting the artistry involved in capturing these unforgettable moments.

Could we get that Matt Jones photo on a t-shirt before this years Texas game?
There’s now a Barstool t shirt with the same image likeness. You should probably try to get some of those proceeds. They also used what looks like an Alabama helmet for it. Shame shame.
